Lately things have been crazy, as most of you know. Living the corporate life, days are between twelve to fourteen hours, though the work is very interesting.

Random post time!
I’ve been working a little more than normal (I’ve put in about 30 hours of “overtime” since last Thursday; quotation marks because I won’t see it in $, but perhaps in lieu) and the one thing that’s been keeping me going, other than faint fantasies of taking over the world and ruling it with an iron fist, has been music.
Hey hey. Just a random post to confirm that I am still indeed alive.
So I’ve been saving up for a tenor ukulele (the generally accepted types are soprano (what I have now), concert (slightly larger/louder than the soprano), tenor (more volume and bass but, more importantly, longer fretboard, the whole instrument is about 4″ longer than a soprano) and baritone (a mini guitar, 50% loner than a soprano and often with different tuning).
Music. Muzik. Musique. MMMM. Mmmm. M.
Distinctions made by genre, quality, periods… what it comes down to is whether something speaks to me, piques my interest. I don’t believe in high or low brow distinctions however. Like literature and other forms of art, I find myself intrigued as soon as I get a sense that what’s being expressed is genuine (a natural expression, as opposed to contrived or planned). Coldplay, for instance, plan on making it as popular and “good” as possible. Chris Martin doesn’t hide this. When Parachutes came out I rather liked it. However the themes of subsequent albums were lost on me and I simply lost interest. Others, such as Matthew Good, aren’t necessarily as accessible, but it works for me.
After work I went to pick up a parcel from the UPS warehouse. One they confirmed would be there. That their website tracking page confirmed was waiting for me. But it wasn’t. The parcel was on a truck. I decided I’d not be like the previous two customers, who stormed out swearing and throwing stuff around (not exaggerating) or be bothered by one of the clerks asking customers if their company is hiring ’cause she hates UPS (not even joking). After a few minutes they offered for me to meet up with the driver to get the parcel. So I was given the address to a plaza and told that he’d be there and I was provided with a half hour window of opportunity. Yeah. He never showed. I left 50 minutes later.
Well, I finally bit the bullet and recorded myself playing a song on the ukulele.
As a backgrounder, I’ve been playing for about 6 months. he only instrument I’ve played before were the drums when I was a teenager so this is the first instrument I’m learning that involves notes. Or strings. I’ve been struggling learning a few songs, but yesterday I came across a tab for Sam Hall. Playing this song came a lot more naturally to me than the others. So 24 hours later, I recorded it.
