Diary (XIV)

Saturday. The week was ‘meh’ but all in all I’d be a fool to complain. Woke up, went for a run (about bloody time, I know). Did 3k in just under 20 minutes. Now that the weather’s nice will try to run at least twice a week.

Diary (XIII)

Today, I pamper myself.

Work was work, work is over. Dinner: home-made calzone (passata, mozzarella, veggie sausage, green olives, fresh basil), salad (boston lettuce, cucumber, belgian endives, basil vinaigrette), red wine (St-Emilion Chateau Vieux Pourret). Rawr.

Cheese, Glorious, Glorious Cheese

I love cheese. Adore it. I just finished eating a sandwich. It would not have been a proper sandwich without cheese. Fresh bread, black olive spread, hummus, butter and… cheese.

Veggie Food: Yves Veggie Corn Dogs

Time for more veggie stuff. Although few ever truly accept that I’m vegetarian (being 6’5″ and 235lbs), I am. Deal with it.

I was walking through the aisles of the local supermarket and spotted this. As I’m not in the mood to cook tonight, thought I’d try it.

Thinly-Veiled Eating Disorders

I occasionally come across people, often colleagues, who boast the discovery of a new diet, or who refine a triumphant monologue about their success with a specific regime of sorts.  They discover a new ‘well-being’ secret previously unbeknown to humanity, achieve health feats or herculean proportions or overcome difficulties that make Mother Teresa look like a chump. But it’s basically no carbs, lots of exercise and numerous sick days off work.

Diary (IV)

Earlier today I realised that I’ve not had more than a glass of alkyhöl (OMG! he’s using a transcriptive euphemism for alcohol, the man has a problem!) in the last two weeks. Two weeks! Then again I can go through a bottle of sweet, sweet Jura Superstition in a couple of days… hrm. Ah well.  Think I’ll have some Superstition tonight, after a homemade calzone (Jamie Oliver’s dough recipe, passata, freshly grated mozzarella, freshly grated Parmesan, fresh chopped basil, bit of salt and whatever toppings you want! In my case – green olives, nostaligia and self-pity). Incidentally, I discovered about 6 months ago that it wasn’t the sauce that was making me insanely ill after eating bought pizza. It was the dough. No antacid would help. It was horrible. Now I just make my own – and unlike the pizza places, I can trust myself for it to have the right sauce to cheese ratio.

Diary (II)

Tartelettes aux pommes

Image by Laurence Vagner via Flickr

Hello happy people (all three of you who read this blog; two minus me) (yes, I just used a semi-colon, deal with it).

Today I woke up at about 7:30am, looked outside and saw how outstanding a morning it was. The sun was out, the breeze was blowing, the air was cool… bloody terrific. I couldn’t think of anything to do so I went back to sleep.

At 9:45 I got up and decided to spoil myself to a pastry breakfast at Rahier. I knew they’d be out of croissants by now, so settled for an apple “slice” (square bit of pastry, crème pâtissière, slices of cooked apples) and a chocolate éclair (the last one!!!). And coffee (they insist on walking it down to the end of the counter, placing it by the creamers and sugar dispenser when I take mine black).

I sat down and before taking a sip or a bite dove into the book I’m presently reading. After my first sip or so, I see the little round table that was beside mine, start to move. I looked up, simply to make sure nothing was amiss, and a lady made a little jump. In a thick European accent of no discernible origin, she fumbled through: “Oh… may I take this table?”
